I am writing to share the story of Ocean, a dog originally bred to be a service dog candidate who was diagnosed with a severely enlarged heart at three weeks old. Despite a poor prognosis at five weeks, we chose to manage her condition with medication rather than euthanasia to give her the best life possible.

Ocean grew into a playful, adventurous puppy. At 12 months old, we sought a second opinion from the Colorado State University Teaching Hospital, which offered a full mitral valve replacement surgery.

We traveled to Colorado for the operation when she was one year old and were fortunate to receive financial assistance for the surgery itself. Nearly two years later, Ocean is thriving, though she still requires lifelong medications and regular cardiology checkups.
